MISUSE OF MEDICINE IN HOSPITALS, THE ROLE OF EDUCATION AND POLICY. The use of irrational medicines in hospital settings, both in private and public institutions, continues to be a significant challenge. Controlling the overuse or misuse of medication is difficult, but it is possible through the implementation of simple yet effective policies. Based on my long term observation and experiences, I believe that many doctors will agree with the point I raise here.   One of the most common issues in hospitals, particularly in the outpatient department ( OPD), is the repeated visit of patients who often do not require any medication. These patients, frequently accompanied by family members, may demand medicines despite the absence of any clinical need. When a doctor decides that medication is unnecessary, patients may become aggressive and in some cases misbehave or threaten the doctor.Faced with such situations, doctors may feel pressured to prescribe medication to avoid conflict,...

STREAMLINING UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONS: The Case For Refundable Fees and Simplified Forms

Image
Like many others, I have experienced the frustration of applying for jobs repeatedly. In Pakistan, it's common for institutions to require documents from matriculation onward, all with attestation. My question is, why do they need a complete set of documents at the time of submitting the form? It would be more efficient to have a concise form submission process. Institutions could collect the necessary documents only after candidates clear the test. Given that we live in a computerised era, it's time for institutions to update their policies and improve their systems. Secondly, In Pakistan several challenges impact students' ability to apply for higher education. The literacy rate is relatively low, and the cost of living is high, which makes it difficult for many people to manage their expenses . When students wish to apply to various U...

Pedestrian Bridges

Image
The importance of using pedestrian bridges ensuring safety and efficiency .  When I see certain things I am compelled to think about the standard of education in Pakistan and the purpose of education. Education gives human  beings awareness, intellect and the a ability to think and understand. However, our education system in our country compels us to rely on our thinking. Are we really an educated nation ? One example that comes to mind is the pedestrian or bicycle bridge’s .It is disheartening  to witness the government spending money to build these bridges for the safety of people or students only to see them still crossing busy road instead of using designated pedestrian bridges. While it may seem like a harmless shortcut but they are putting their lives in danger and hindering the overall efficiency of traffic and public transit systems. According to WHO, road traffic accidents are leading cause of death for people aged between 15 to 29 years.  A specific ex...

Gutka Consumption Amongst Hospital Employees

Image
Since long I have been thinking about writing on social issues especially in Pakistan. The first issue that strikes my mind is the consumption of gutka and paan by the people of Pakistan. I know many people have already written and talked about it ,but as a doctor I have personally witnessed the use of gutka even within hospital premises, it is disheartening to see hospital employees specially male staff indulging in such harmful habits while performing their duties in critical areas such as ICU, casualty nursery, paediatric ward and so on.  According to WHO, tobacco is the single most preventable cause of death in the world. It is estimated that 5.4 million deaths occur every year due to its use.   Although the Government Of Sindh in 2011 had imposed a ban on gutka, the implementation of this ban seems to be non existent I urge the government authorities to take strict action and enforce penalties on doctors and hospital employees as well as employees in other offices wh...
