Pedestrian Bridges
The importance of using pedestrian bridges ensuring safety and efficiency.
When I see certain things I am compelled to think about the standard of education in Pakistan and the purpose of education. Education gives human beings awareness, intellect and the a ability to think and understand. However, our education system in our country compels us to rely on our thinking. Are we really an educated nation ? One example that comes to mind is the pedestrian or bicycle bridge’s .It is disheartening to witness the government spending money to build these bridges for the safety of people or students only to see them still crossing busy road instead of using designated pedestrian bridges. While it may seem like a harmless shortcut but they are putting their lives in danger and hindering the overall efficiency of traffic and public transit systems. According to WHO, road traffic accidents are leading cause of death for people aged between 15 to 29 years.
A specific example is the Jamshoro road near Mehran and Sindh university where a pedestrian or bicycle bridge was recently built due to several students death while attempting to cross the road. However it is unfortunate to note that very young few people are using this pedestrian.
Conclusion.
It is a fundamental practice that ensure the safety of pedestrian and enhances the efficiency of traffic and public transportation system.By choosing to use designated bridge’s instead of risking their lives on busy roads.
- The government should actively implement traffic rules to address this issue instead of just imposing toll taxes, heavy penalties should be imposed on those who do not use pedestrian or bicycle bridges.
- Traffic safety education program. These program can include information on pedestrians laws, road safety and a benefits of using designated crossing areas.
- Increased enforcement and police presence. Deploying law enforcement officers to monitor pedestrian area.
- Additionally awareness programs should be promoted through social media platforms to educate and encourage the public to utilise the pedestrian for their own safety, particularly through celebrities,if they start endorsing awareness messages, people will follow them. They can also encourage physical activity and healthy lifestyles by providing opportunities for walking, presenting citizens with pleasant alternatives to sedentary mode of transportation.
So let’s prioritize safety, efficiency and importance of pedestrian bridges in our daily lives.
Really very sensitive issue which is most neglected especially in Jamshoro where there universities with thousands of students and when I worked in casualty of Lumhus Jamshoro daily right to ten students only in morning came injured only because of not following traffic rules while in foreign countries these pedistrian crossing are strictly followed.
